Students’ Accommodation - Hostels at Labuyaya Premises

On August 31, 2019, Vice-Chancellor Prof. EMP Ekanayake declared the hostels at Labuyaya premises open. The hostels provide housing for the faculty’s undergraduate medical students. Female students are housed in Mahamayadevi hall, while male students are housed in Mayadunne hall. They are situated on separate land behind the faculty complex.

Medical students in their first, second, and third years of study are currently housed in these two halls. The rooms will become empty once all of the students from these batches have been accommodated. Wayamba University Sri Lanka has devised a set of criteria for selecting the new hostel housing.

Mahamayadevi Hall - (Girls)

There are 49 rooms available to students in the hall, as well as one staff room for the academic sub warden, one special room set aside as a sick room, and one room set aside as a storage room. The hall houses a total of 196 female students.

One hostel room is shared by four female students. Four students share two bunk beds, two enormous study tables, four steel lockers, and two towel racks in each room. There are six bath showers and five toilets on each floor. There are two tea pantries in the hall, one on the ground floor and the other on the second story. A common area on the bottom floor is also available for students’ leisure activities.

Mayadunne Hall - (Boys)

There are 41 rooms available to students in the hall, as well as one staff room for the academic sub warden, one special room set aside as a sick room, and one room set aside as a storage room. The hall houses a total of 164 male students. One hostel room is shared by four female students. Four students share two bunk beds, two enormous study tables, four steel lockers, and two towel racks in each room. There are six bath showers and five toilets on each floor. There are two tea pantries in the hall, one on the ground floor and the other on the third story. A common area on the bottom floor is also available for students’ leisure activities.

The Common Facilities at the Halls

In the halls, the facilities are shared. For student recreation, there is a small outdoor area between two halls, little reading rooms on the first, second and third floors, and a common room on the first floor. Students can use the outdoor area for outdoor sports such as netball, volley ball, and so on. Students can use the tiny reading rooms in each story for study purposes. Students can hold meetings in the common area on the ground level. Students are permitted to use sports equipment, televisions, newspapers/magazines, and other objects as long as they adhere to the University’s basic guidelines.

Safety and Security at the Halls

The university security team, led by the university marshal and overseen by the registrar, is concerned about the safety and security of students in the halls. During the day and evening hours, the residence hall security crew provides security in the halls. To satisfy the continuous security demands of the residence hall system, residence hall security interacts with the university security unit.

Students must take responsibility for maintaining a safe environment in order to ensure everyone’s safety. In the residence halls, a range of security measures are in place. Any conduct that could jeopardize a residence hall’s or its tenants’ security is prohibited

Hall Rules and Regulations

Students must check in before 10.00 p.m. and must check out by 6.00 a.m. Before leaving the hostel on weekends, holidays, or vacations, students must notify the hall officials. Students are reminded to dress correctly while on hostel grounds, and they are encouraged to observe all rules and regulations. Because the dining room, common room, and study room are shared by all students, we demand exemplary behavior in those places at all times. In the hostel, pets are not permitted. Students are strongly encouraged to adhere to the rules and regulations in order to maintain their safety and discipline.
