Department of Medicine

Undergraduate Programme

The department has developed a comprehensive curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge with practical clinical training.

  1. Clinical lectures

 Clinical lectures will be conducted starting from the 3rd  academic year onwards, in parallel with the para clinical lectures. The lecture series will cover all the essential topics which the students are supposed to know to practise as a junior doctor.

  1. Patient centered learning

 The academic programme consisted of several general medicine appointments and short appointments for the medical sub-specialties. The clinical medicine appointments will be conducted as follows.

  • Introductory medical appointment (MSGOP) at Teaching Hospital Kuliyapitiya
  • Long rotation at General Medical Wards for 3rd and 4th year students at Teaching Hospital Kurunegala
  • Professorial medical appointment for final year students at the Professorial Unit at the Teaching Hospital Kurunegala
  • Short appointments for medical sub-specialties at Teaching Hospital Kurunegala

During the clinical appointments patient centered learning will be encouraged. Bed side teaching and ward classes will be conduced to discuss about important clinical scenarios.

  1. Case base Discussions

Weekly case based discussions will be conducted by the Department of Medicine, for the 4th year medical students to improve their clinical knowledge and to orient the patients for the Final MBBS Examination.

  1. Resources

Teaching Hospital Kurunegala, is one of the largest tertiary care hospital in Sri Lank, with a wide draining area and the students can experience a diverse case variety and develop their clinical skills.

The students will be provided an structured printed clinical guide to facilitate their learning. This guide book will provide all the topics the students need to cover during their appointments.

  1. Assessment

Apart from the extensive assessment at the Final MBBS examination, the following assessments will be done by the department.

Continuous assessments will be done starting from the 3rd year onwards, including end-appointment viva and portfolio assessments. The students are supposed to maintain a portfolio for each appointment.

Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) will be conducted at the end of the professorial medical appointment.
