Our Mission The Department of Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, is a premier center for medical education and research. We are dedicated to exploring the profound complexities of the human body from the intricate workings of biomolecules and single cells to the harmonious integration of entire organ systems.
The Science of Life Physiology is the fundamental science of life. It provides the essential framework for understanding how the human body functions, self-regulates, and adapts to ever-changing internal and external environments. Central to our discipline is the concept of homeostasis: the dynamic biophysical, biochemical, and cellular communication mechanisms that sustain health and vitality.
The Bridge to Clinical Medicine We view physiology not merely as a foundational science, but as the bedrock of clinical practice. Recognizing that a thorough mastery of the normal physiological state is prerequisite to understanding the abnormal (pathology and human disease), our curriculum acts as a vital bridge. The knowledge gained here forms the indispensable foundation for all subsequent para-clinical and clinical disciplines, including pathology, pharmacology, internal medicine, surgery, and paediatrics.
Our Educational Approach Committed to excellence in medical teaching, our department employs a dynamic, student-centered curriculum. Our educational program goes beyond traditional instruction, incorporating interactive lectures, small-group tutorials, and seminars. Through a combination of laboratory work and early clinical skills training, we bridge the gap between basic science and patient care.
Graduate Outcomes Our ultimate goal is to cultivate more than just knowledgeable medical students; we strive to develop inquisitive, critical thinkers. By the end of the preclinical physiology program, our students are empowered to draw rational, evidence-based conclusions about normal human function. We equip future physicians with the scientific foundation and the analytical mindset required to investigate and treat deranged physiological functions throughout their medical careers.
