Department of Physiology

Undergraduate program:

Physiology explores the profound mechanisms of life from the fundamental molecular and cellular processes to the sophisticated, integrated organ systems that sustain a healthy human being.

The Department of Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, is deeply committed to delivering a high-quality, student-centered undergraduate education. Through the dedicated efforts of our academic and non-academic staff, our primary objective is to build a robust foundation in core physiological principles while emphasizing their direct relevance to clinical practice from day one.

Physiology, alongside other foundational sciences, forms a cornerstone of the structured medical curriculum during the preclinical phase (Year 1 Semester 1 to Year 2 Semester 1).

Our Teaching & Learning Approach We deliver our curriculum through a dynamic blend of traditional instruction and modern, evidence-based pedagogical approaches. This includes:

  • System-Based Lectures: Clear, logically structured sessions that break down complex physiological mechanisms.
  • Small-Group Tutorials: Interactive sessions designed to clarify concepts, discuss clinical correlations, and foster collaborative learning.
  • Active & Independent Learning: Promoting self-directed study and critical thinking to prepare students for lifelong medical learning.
  • Academic Excellence: We actively mentor and sponsor our students to participate in national-level inter-medical school Physiology quiz competitions, fostering a spirit of healthy academic rivalry and excellence.

Assessments In alignment with modern competency-based medical education (CBME), student performance is rigorously evaluated at the end of each semester. We utilize a comprehensive assessment strategy designed to test both knowledge and application, including:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs): Single Best Answer (SBA) formats to test broad conceptual understanding.
  • Structured Essay Questions (SEQs): To evaluate in-depth knowledge and logical reasoning.
  • Objective Structured Practical Examinations (OSPEs) & Vivas: To rigorously assess practical competencies, clinical skills, and the ability to articulate physiological concepts.

Recommended Core Texts To support their learning, students are encouraged to utilize globally recognized, standard physiological texts:

  • Latest edition of Textbook of Medical Physiology by A.C. Guyton and J.E. Hall
  • Latest edition of Ganong’s Review of Medical Physiology by K.E. Barrett et al.
