Welcome to the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. The Department of Anatomy is committed to be an active partner in the preclinical phase of MBBS Degree programme and biomedical research.

Anatomy is the oldest theoretical discipline in medicine which goes back over 2000 years to the ancient Greeks. A comprehensive knowledge of Anatomy and structural topography of organs (including their variations) is an essential precondition of learning all disciplines of medical and health sciences. The Department of Anatomy primarily focused at creating innovative teaching and learning experience for undergraduate medical students.

The department of anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka was established in 2018. The Anatomy courses conducted for the medical degrees at our faculty consists of both theoretical (Lectures) and practical components based on cadaveric dissections. Currently, this laboratory is supported by a wide range of quality teaching and learning resources including extensive collection of bones, human prosected specimens and models and is supported by interacting multimedia and other technological enhancements. The department has been playing a major role in teaching undergraduate medical curriculum through the integration of cutting-edge technology and creating a conductive and engaging learning platform for the students. Our laboratory was designed aiming at facilitating practical learning experience for medical students by integrating technology and anatomical specimens as learning resources to enhance the delivery of course content and enable students to develop core competencies in areas such as surface, clinical and applied anatomy. Further, the department also supports and create opportunity to students to harness soft skills such as communication and teamwork through a collaborative learning system.

Head's Message

The Department of Anatomy has been recognized for its excellence in teaching applied/clinical anatomy and innovative teaching methodologies: – blended learning, small group discussion, interactive seminars with students’ participation as well as for its outstanding and well-respected teachers. Apart from these strengths, the department has internal excellent resources and external experts for teaching anatomy.

The department is proud to have the ‘state of art’ Human Anatomy Dissection Hall which displays human museum specimens and prosected specimens and provides digital media and is heavily used for medical education. Thedepartment developed a well-equipped microscopic laboratory with the digital media facilities and Human Tissue Processing Laboratory and Cytology laboratory together with the Department of Pathology. These laboratories are occupied with high end novel equipment to provide in-service to undergraduate teaching, researchers and to nearer hospitals. The human Osteology and Anthropology laboratory is being equipped with high end digital anthropometric equipment for strengthening the research works carried out by the department and the faculty.

While we follow traditional teaching method using cadaveric dissections, prosected cadavers, ‘living anatomy” and Clinical Application of Medical Sciences such as physical examination, early exposure of preclinical students to hospital setup have been implemented with greater emphasis in the new curriculum. Unlike a typical anatomy course, which emphasizes more on the imparting of knowledge and skills, this Department emphasizes on value-based education by integrating humane values and practices with academic instruction.

The Department continuously launches research program, particularly in the key thrust areas of population studies, morphology, morphometry and medical education etc. Our ultimate goal is to train competent health care professionals by teaching the basic structure of the human body and clinical applications which will aid them in future for careful diagnosis and proper treatment for patients.
