The Department of Pathology of the Faculty of Medicine, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, Kuliyapitiya, is a key academic unit that contributes substantially to the undergraduate medical curriculum through teaching, practical training, academic coordination, and para-clinical activities. The department plays a central role in enabling students to understand the mechanisms of disease and the pathological basis of clinical medicine, thereby linking basic medical sciences with clinical application.
The department is staffed by two senior lecturers with specialist expertise in histopathology and haematology, providing students with both strong academic guidance and clinically relevant perspectives in pathology education. Teaching activities are supported by a fully equipped, state-of-the-art histopathology laboratory, a pathology museum, and a microscope laboratory for student use, all of which facilitate interactive and practice-oriented learning. These facilities help students develop competence in gross and microscopic pathology, specimen-based learning, and interpretation of disease processes.
In addition to its teaching responsibilities, the department contributes to para-clinical management and coordination within the faculty, supporting the broader academic and professional training of medical students. Through its academic services, practical facilities, and specialist expertise, the Department of Pathology continues to make an important contribution to the faculty’s mission of producing knowledgeable, competent, and professionally grounded medical graduates.
