Faculty of Medicine Publishes Internationally Recognized Research on Body Donor Commemoration

The Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, is pleased to announce the publication of a scholarly article in Anatomical Sciences Education, a leading international journal in anatomy and medical education.


The article highlights the commemorative ceremony organized by the Department of Anatomy to honour individuals who generously donated their bodies for medical education and research. As a newly established medical faculty, Wayamba University has placed strong emphasis on
fostering ethical values, respect, and gratitude towards body donors whose contributions are indispensable to the training of future healthcare professionals.


The publication describes how the ceremony was conducted within the Sri Lankan cultural and religious context, incorporating Buddhist traditions such as a dhamma sermon, almsgiving to monks, and the transfer of merit to donors. The event brought together donor families, academic staff, students, and members of the clergy, providing an opportunity to collectively acknowledge the selfless contribution of body donors to medical education.


The authors emphasize that such commemorative practices play an important role in cultivating professionalism, empathy, and ethical responsibility among medical students. The ceremony also serves to strengthen public awareness of body donation and its value to medical science
while respecting the cultural and spiritual beliefs of donors and their families.
